Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) are an important initiative of the Government of India aimed at providing quality education to tribal children in remote and underdeveloped areas. The scheme was introduced to bridge the educational gap faced by tribal communities and to ensure that their children receive the same opportunities as others in terms of academic growth, cultural enrichment, and holistic development. Established under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, EMRS institutions are designed on the lines of modern residential schools, equipped with the necessary infrastructure, trained faculty, and facilities to nurture both academic and extracurricular talents.
The schools focus not only on formal education but also on preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of tribal communities. By creating an inclusive environment that balances modern learning with traditional knowledge, EMRS seeks to empower tribal students to contribute meaningfully to society. The scheme emphasizes high-quality human resource deployment, robust institutional frameworks, and a curriculum that encourages leadership, creativity, and innovation among students.

With defined functions, clear objectives, and tangible benefits, EMRS stands as a model for educational transformation in tribal-dominated areas. It reflects a long-term vision of social equity, nation building, and the upliftment of marginalized communities through education.

About EMRS Recruitment 2025 and Eklavya Model Residential Schools
As the name suggests, the EMRS scheme is a significant initiative by the Government of India to develop ‘model’ residential schools for the Scheduled Tribes (STs) across the country. It falls under the purview of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and was introduced by it around 1997-98.
The criteria based on which an area is considered eligible for the establishment of such a model school is that it should fall under the list of such States/UTs that have been specified as eligible for the grants under Article 275(1) of the Constitution of India. Going by the budget of 2018-19, each such block that contains at least 20,000 tribals or more than 50% of the Scheduled Tribe population will have an Eklavya Model Residential School by the year 2025 is done.
Expenses/Funds/ Maintenance
The government provides an amount of Rs 30 lakh once altogether at the time of the establishment of an EMRS, and after that, an additional amount to a maximum of Rs 30 lakh is provided as per the requirement of the schools during the year. If there is a need beyond that, the expenditure is handled by the respective state governments.
Current Status
As of 2025, the Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) scheme, managed under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs through NESTS (National Education Society for Tribal Students), has made significant strides in providing quality education to tribal students. A total of 722 EMRSs have been sanctioned nationwide, with 495 currently functional, catering to approximately 189,375 students across tribal regions. The schools employ 9,052 teaching staff and 4,393 non-teaching staff, ensuring both academic and administrative support.
The government aims to establish 728 EMRSs by 2026 to cover every eligible tribal block. In line with this expansion, a major recruitment drive in 2025 opened 7,267 teaching and non-teaching positions. Efforts are ongoing to upgrade infrastructure, enhance academic standards, and promote the schools as centers of excellence.
